INDIA INDEPENDENCE

India marks 75th anniversary of Independence from British rule

New Delhi, Aug 15 (EFE).- On the 75th anniversary of India’s independence, the promise of a secular country that guarantees equal rights for minorities has come under the shadow of growing demand by the right-wing, emboldened by similar-minded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to declare the country a Hindu state.

The horrors of the subcontinent being divided into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-dominated Pakistan on Aug. 15, 1947, including one of the largest forced migrations in history and unprecedented majoritarian violence that killed up to one million people.

As Pakistan - the “land of the pure” - put Islam at the centre of its national identity, India promised equal rights to its minorities. (Camera: PIYAL ADHIKARY/FAROOQ KHAN).
