PHILIPPINES FESTIVAL

Filipino villagers celebrate unique water hyacinth craft festival

Las Pinas, Jul 21 (EFE/EPA).- The Water Lily Festival, a colourful and unique celebration, took place on Friday in Las Pinas City, Metro Manila, Philippines, and attracted scores of Filipino villagers.

Teenagers dressed in traditional costumes made from dried water hyacinth stems performed as part of the festivities, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

The festival is an initiative to promote water hyacinth-based livelihoods for residents of flood-prone communities in the city of Las Pinas and neighbouring areas.

The use of water hyacinth, often considered problematic because of its rapid growth in waterways, for handicrafts and other businesses has proven to be a creative solution to environmental and socio-economic challenges in the region. (Camera: FRANCIS R. MALASIG).
