New exhibition exploring Picasso's relationship with abstraction opens in Brussels

Brussels, Oct 14 (EFE), (Camera: Leo Rodríguez/Jon Ander Tapia) The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium investigates the paradoxical relationship between Pablo Picasso and abstraction, an artistic movement of which the Spanish painter was convinced detractor and unintended precursor, in an exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the artist's death.

"Picasso and Abstraction" opened its doors on Friday until February 12 and shows more than 140 works by the Spanish artist.

SOUNDBITES OF MICHEL DRAGUET, DIRECTOR OF THE MUSEUM AND CURATOR OF THE EXHIBITION:

1.- "What interested me was to bring him to the history to which he belongs. There is no book on the history of abstraction that does not begin with a painting by Picasso, despite the fact that he is not an artist who has belonged to abstraction".

2.- "We have also faced the rise of production costs, like everyone else, so it is an exhibition that represents a great investment for the museum, but we believe is worth it because we have found here an essential moment of the work of the 20th century".
