RAMADAN EGYPT

Employees of Cairo marketing company hand out food to needy during Ramadan

Cairo (Egypt), Mar 27 (EFE).- (Camera: Helena Pelicano) Egypt faces the end of the month of Ramadan with fewer lanterns in its streets and less meat on its iftar (breaking of the fast) menus, but with a spirit of solidarity that this time is divided between donations to fellow citizens affected by the crisis and aid for Gaza.

The azaque, or `zakat` in Arabic, is one of the pillars of the Islamic faith and consists of a financial and material donation that every Muslim must make during their holy month to help those in need.

"There is a belief in this country that providing food is one of the most charitable acts during this time," explains Afer Abdelrahman, head of individual donations at the Mersal Foundation.
