FRANCE PROTESTS

Eiffel Tower workers demonstrate for fourth consecutive day

Paris, Feb 22 (EFE).- (Camera: Edgar Sapiña Manchado) The poor state of the Eiffel Tower and inefficient economic management are the main complaints raised on Thursday by the General Confederation of Labor (CGT) and Worker's Force (FO) unions on the fourth consecutive day of a strike that has led to the monument's closure.

SOUNDBITES OF:

-SOPHIE BINET, GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE CGT:

"What we criticize the management of the Eiffel Tower is its refusal to negotiate, and what we criticize is an unbalanced economic model, which does not allow any guarantee for the future of the Eiffel Tower.

Repainting the Eiffel Tower is not an easy task. It is a multi-year project, and lead has been discovered, so the cost of the works will increase.

Wealth management cannot be short-term financial management, long-term investments are necessary and, yes, it is expensive.

The Eiffel Tower must have the means to make these essential investments. And the Eiffel Tower must also have the means to pay its staff and hire new staff. The negotiations have not started because the management of the Eiffel Tower refuses to negotiate and that is why I have come, to help."

-ALEXANDRE LEBORGE, CGT DELEGATE:

"Last year the centenary of Gustave Eiffel's death was commemorated. We can also commemorate the fact that he was an extremely meticulous engineer, extremely meticulous in the way that he maintained the Eiffel Tower and his other structures."
