Ecuador's Armed Forces detain hundreds in crackdown on organised crime

Latacunga, Jan 10 (EFE).- The head of Ecuador's Armed Forces Joint Command, Jaime Vela, announced on Wednesday that in operations carried out on Tuesday against the wave of attacks and riots generated by organised crime groups, '329 terrorists' have been arrested and five have been killed.

We have arrested 329 terrorists; we have killed five terrorists,' Vela said, summing up the operations following the decree by the country's president, Daniel Noboa, who on Tuesday declared an internal armed conflict due to the escalation of violent actions by organised crime groups.

At a press conference, the military chief confirmed that no military personnel had been injured or killed, although two policemen had been killed and one seriously wounded. (Camera: JUAN FRANCISCO CHÁVEZ/ JOSÉ JÁCOME).
