ECUADOR VIOLENCE

Ecuador armed forces say they won’t retreat, negotiate with extremists

Quito, Jan 9 (EFE).- The head of Ecuador's armed forces said Tuesday that his troops will not retreat or negotiate with extremist groups.

Jaime Vela made these statements after the meeting of the State Security Council headed by Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa.

The country is experiencing moments of great tension after an armed commando raid on TC Televisión in Guayaquil, which ended with the arrest of at least 13 criminals and the release of the channel's staff.

At least eight people were killed and two others injured in several armed attacks across the city on Tuesday, according to the mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Álvarez. (Camera: HANDOUT).
