Easter Island's global crusade against plastics in oceans

Easter Island (Chile), Oct 4 (EFE) - (Camera: Amanda Herreros/ Rodrigo Saez) If you bury your hands in Anakena, the most famous beach paradise on Chile's Easter Island, you will find fine white sand, but also a good handful of microplastics: plastic pollution is a plague in this remote territory in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, which has embarked on a global crusade to raise awareness around the world.

A study by the Catholic University of Northern Chile estimated that 4.4 million items of rubbish wash up on the shores of Rapa Nui, the indigenous name given to the 163.6 square kilometre island, which is famous the world over for its thousand-year-old humanoid sculptures, the moais.
