Digging wells, the desperate solution to overcome the drought in the Amazon

Manaus (Brazil), Oct 7 (EFE).- The drought is severely hitting the Brazilian Amazon, where some inhabitants have been forced to dig artisanal wells with a handful of boards on the dry lake beds in search of water to survive.

Raimundo Silva, 67 years old, is a merchant and fisherman, but for a few weeks he has had nothing to catch or sell. These days he is working hard to draw water from the well he has made in Lake Puraquequara, in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas.

STATEMENTS OF RAIMUNDO SILVA, MERCHANT AND FISHERMAN:

"The situation here is not good for anyone, not for me, not for my neighbor over there, not for the others there and for no one here. The further you go, the more difficult it will be for you. They are all in the same situation."

[Reporter: Have you ever seen a drought as serious as this?]

"No, not here in Paraquaquara."

[Reporter: And are you worried?]

"Yes, because in a few days our sales will drop, because no one can come here to buy anything anymore. Whoever comes will have to come by land."
