Tokyo, Apr 1 (EFE/EPA).- A study conducted by Tohoku University in northern Japan predicts that by the year 2500 all Japanese will share the surname "Sato", which is currently the most common surname in Japan. This forecast is based on the continuing demographic decline and the current civil laws that dictate that married couples must adopt only one surname, either the husband's or the wife's. Given that by 2023, 1.5% of the Japanese population will bear the surname "Sato" and that the country is facing accelerated ageing and a declining birth rate, Professor Hiroshi Yoshida, author of the study, predicts that by 2446, half of the Japanese population will bear the surname "Sato", reaching full saturation by 2531.
