NOTRE DAME FIRE

The day Notre Dame defied fire

Paris (France), Apr 14 (EFE) - The flames that lit up the Parisian night reached every home in the world in the form of emotion and sadness. Notre Dame, the most iconic of the world's Gothic cathedrals, burned live and created a global feeling of emotion and solidarity.

Five years after that 14 April 2019, the temple is gradually recovering its original appearance, following the directives launched by the president, Emmanuel Macron, who put a gamble on the table: to reopen five years after the disaster.

"Thanks to the mobilisation of everyone, we are making real the challenge, which may have seemed crazy, of reopening the cathedral in 2024," Maryline Guiry, director of the body coordinating the restoration work, told EFE.

1.- Maryline Guiry, Director General of the organisation in charge of the restoration of Notre Dame.

- We are where we wanted to be and today, thanks to everyone's efforts, we are on track to meet the challenge of reopening the cathedral in 2024. And that is what we are going to do".

- "Yes, most of it is finished. We've been working on this for almost five years now, so most of it is over."

- We're going to see the cathedral as it was before the fire, but on the inside, I hope you'll be as dazzled as you were before the fire.

I hope you are as dazzled as we are, when you go into the cathedral, we will have this stone which is going to be, in the end, very clear and gives quite extraordinary light."

2.- Maryvonne de Saint-Pulgent, historian and expert on cathedrals

- We watched this fire unfold at night with the thrill of suspense. We felt like we were in a disaster film and it fascinated everyone and everyone stopped to watch and wondered, so they participated and also felt they had a part to play in saving the cathedral.

-Something was missing. It's a cathedral that has never suffered a catastrophe before, and deep down you get more attached to the people and things that you have seen in danger and feared for them.

- In 800 years, Notre-Dame de Paris had never had a fire. It was a cathedral that was a little too happy, and the fact that it has been through so much makes it all the more endearing and, in the end, all the more glorious.

- The other positive aspect of this fire is that it has taught us a lot about this cathedral and has increased our admiration for the master builders of the 12th and 13th centuries, who invented a whole series of totally innovative elements.

- There were times when everyone really thought we wouldn't make it out, so we also had the impression of a somewhat inexplicable intervention. For believers, there is a small dose of miracle in the rescue of Notre-Dame de Paris. So yes, I think, in the end, once again, the cathedral has come out of this even stronger.
