EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries: It's necessary to boost efforts to strengthen blue economy

Athens, Apr 17 (EFE) - The European Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevicius, said in an interview with EFE that consolidating the development of the blue economy requires redoubling efforts in many sectors, including technology, to create jobs for local communities.

Sinkevicius is taking part in the 9th edition of the Our Ocean 2024 Conference in Athens, where the commissioner announced the adoption of 40 new commitments related to the blue economy, with a budget of 3.5 billion euros.

The commitments include sustainable fishing, the fight against pollution, maritime safety and aid for third countries for the implementation of measures to promote the blue economy, especially in island states.
