HONG KONG TIANANMEN ANNIVERSARY

China, Hong Kong up vigilance on Tiananmen Massacre anniversary

Hong Kong, Jun 4 (EFE).- Tuesday marked 35 years since the Tiananmen Square Massacre with the usual restrictions in Beijing to access the square while in Hong Kong extreme surveillance has been carried out to avoid holding any vigil commemorative.

Taipei is the only Chinese-speaking territory that will commemorate the anniversary with an event in the center, where President William Lai said Tuesday that the memory of the massacre "will not disappear in the torrent of history."

More than three decades after the events on Jun. 3 to Jun. 4, 1989, as Chinese army soldiers and tanks marched to the square in Beijing, the subject remains taboo in China, which has never has published an official number of deaths due to military repression. The death toll estimates range between hundreds to thousands, depending on the source. (Camera: LEUNG MAN HEI).
