CHILE RAINS

Chile's heavy rains cause third sinkhole under seafront buildings

Valparaíso, Jun 13 (EFE).- Chilean authorities are keeping a close eye on a third sinkhole that has opened up due to heavy rains under the foundations of buildings built on historic dunes overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Vina del Mar.

The latest sinkhole, which appeared on Sunday, remains precariously perched on a single sand pillar amid an intense weather system affecting the country's central region, with thousands displaced in Viña del Mar, Valparaiso and the Metropolitan Region, home to nearly 40 per cent of Chile's population.
