COLOMBIA BOOKS

The “cazanazis” exist today and they are activists, not perverse beings, says Sergio del Molino.

Bogotá, April 30 (EFE).- The antagonist of 'Los alemanes', a novel that won the 2024 Alfaguara Prize, is called Ziv, an Israeli dedicated to "hunting Nazis", a task that is still alive today throughout the world and those who carry it out, according to the Spanish writer Sergio del Molino, "continue to exist but they are not perverse beings" like those in his story.

STATEMENTS BY SERGIO DEL MOLINO, ALFAGUARA AWARD 2024: Well, in the essay what I actually did was to tell the story, the historical episode. It's in the background of this novel. It's not that they complement each other, they are very, very different things. I discovered a story, an anecdotal episode that fascinated me from the moment I discovered it. I did a story, an essay, a chronicle with it and an exhibition. I did several things and it was always haunting me. It was always with me and from the beginning I always thought it was a great subject for a novel. But I wasn't able to find the tone and what I wanted to tell. I think it took 15 years, which is what has happened, for me to have the craft, the talent, the experience, the readings and develop a little bit of thinking to be able to approach this story the way I wanted to approach it.
