Brazil's Negro River reaches historic low amid severe drought

Manacapuru, Oct 4 (EFE).- The Rio Negro, one of the largest tributaries of the Amazon River, reached an all-time low of 12.68 metres on Thursday, according to the Brazilian Geological Service (SGB).

This breaks the previous record set at the end of October 2023, when the river measured 12.7 metres.

The level is expected to continue to fall due to drought and lack of regular rainfall.

In September, the Manaus City Council declared an emergency for 180 days as the water level fell below the ‘minimum safe level’ of 16 metres.

The neighbouring Solimões River, which flows into the Negro River, also recorded its lowest level in a city bordering Colombia. (Camera: RAPHAEL ALVES).
