Brazil steps up efforts to fight Pantanal fires

Corumbá, Brazil, Jun 26 (EFE).- Brazil has stepped up efforts to control fires in the Pantanal and launched investigations to identify those responsible, after it was confirmed that the blazes were caused by human activity.

The Pantanal, the world's largest wetland shared by Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, is facing an unprecedented fire threat exacerbated by a severe drought.

The fires have mainly affected the southwestern Pantanal, near Corumbá in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, leaving a grey and desolate landscape, typically flooded for most of the year. (Camera: WALLACE CARVALHO/ SEBASTIÃO MOREIRA).
