Bangladesh opens first mosque for transgender community

Dhaka, Apr 12 (EFE/EPA).- The transgender community in Bangladesh joyously welcomed on Friday the opening of the first mosque for the community.

Before, the transgender community in Bangladesh was often excluded from regular mosques due to discrimination. However, this new mosque was a significant step forward, and community members were happy that villagers were joining them in prayers. They hoped to expand the mosque with government support in the future.

"We are not allowed to go to a regular mosque here. Devotees said it wouldn't be fair to offer prayers alongside transgender individuals," community leader Joyita Tonu told EFE. (Camera: MONIRUL ALAM).

- I am very happy to see many people praying with us in the mosque; they also supported us in building this mosque. They are happy to pray with us five times a day.

- We hope and think that in the near future, we will expand this mosque as the Model Mosque with government support.
