San Bartolomé de Pinares, Jan 17 (EFE).- In a picturesque Spanish village of just 510 inhabitants, San Bartolomé de Pinares, the ancient tradition of the "luminarias" was revived on Tuesday night. The ritual illuminated the steep, cobbled streets of the village with a score of bonfires, over which a hundred or so riders boldly passed on horseback. While the visual spectacle of the event is undeniable, it is important to remember the deeper meaning of this centuries-old ritual. For more than two centuries, it was believed that the smoke from these bonfires repelled evil spirits and protected livestock from the epidemics that ravaged the region's herds.
