Rio de Janeiro, Nov 17 (EFE). - Dozens of activists and Indigenous leaders gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday to urge G20 nations to make clear commitments to the Amazon, ahead of the Leaders' Summit set to take place on Monday and Tuesday in the iconic Brazilian city.

Daniela Poubel, Director of Amazônia de Pé:

1. "We understand that all presidents share responsibility for the Amazon rainforest. Brazil is evidently the main custodian, as most of the forest is within our territory, but the Amazon is essential for regulating the global climate. Therefore, all presidents have an interest in keeping the Amazon standing, and we are here to demand they place it at the center of their discussions."

2. "Brazil is proposing an international fund to protect tropical forests, and we want this fund to take off because it is a mechanism for richer countries to finance those that protect them."

Txai Suruí, young leader of the Paiter-Suruí people:

"We organize actions like this to pressure for effective measures, to secure these funds, and to see actions go beyond words. That is what we expect."
