Acapulco launches trash fishing competition to fight marine pollution in Mexico

Acapulco, Feb 11 (EFE).- In Acapulco, Mexico, divers, businessmen, and members of the local community took part in the first-ever trash fishing tournament on Sunday to clean up the seabed of the Paseo del Pescador and Manzanillo beach.

The initiative was launched in response to the aftermath of the devastating Hurricane Otis, which hit the popular tourist area in the southern state of Guerrero at the end of October.

By midday, some 150 people had gathered in 13 teams of six to dive into the sea and remove as much solid waste as possible.

Among the debris removed were at least five outboard motors, refrigerators, tyres, mattresses, cushions, the remains of some yachts and sailboats, chairs, deckchairs, tarpaulins, and other solid waste.

Organisers estimated that at least 5 tonnes of debris would be collected. (Camera: DAVID GUZMÁN).
