Srinagar (India), 20/04/2026.- A Power Development Department (PDD) worker walks on a recently constructed road after repairing electric lines in the interiors of Dal Lake, Srinagar, India, 15 April 2026 (issued 20 April 2026). Encroachment, pollution, and unchecked urbanization continue to threaten the survival of one of Kashmir's most iconic water bodies. According to data provided by the government during the latest budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, 315 out of 697 lakes in the region have disappeared since 1967. This deepening ecological crisis is attributed to untreated sewage, illegal waste dumping, and the loss of wetlands due to rapid urban expansion across the fragile Himalayan landscape.
