epa08431327 A man walks next to the Brazilian Congress, illuminated with pink lights, in Brasilia, Brazil, 02 October 2012 (reissued 19 May 2020). Pink became fashionable as a luxurious color worn by both sexes in the mid 1700s. By the time men moved to darker hues, women adopted pink and it became the girls' color. In the 1960s high fashion and celebrities embraced pink. A significant change took place when the color became a symbol for women's and LGBTQ rights in the 1970s and, from 1990 on, also the symbolic color for the struggle against breast cancer. Subsequently, pink is now recognized as a color of protest, femininity, joy, energy and affirmation.
