New Zealand treaty bill protest march to parliament reaches halfway mark

Rotorua, New Zealand, Nov 15 (EFE) - Thousands of protesters marched through the New Zealand city of Rotorua on Friday in the rain after a controversial bill to reinterpret the principles of the country's founding treaty between the Maori and the Crown passed its first reading.

Some 10,000 protesters forced the temporary closure of Rotorua's main street, the New Zealand Police said in a statement.

The city marked the halfway point of the hīkoi (protest march), which set off on Monday from Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of the country, for a nine-day march across the North Island to parliament in Wellington. (Camera: HANDOUT).
