Peruvian businesses beat expectations at New York textile fair

New York, Sep 27 (EFE).- Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) Úrsula León told EFE that during her recent visit to New York, Peruvian businesses beat expectations at the Sourcing at Magic trade fair with contracts signed to manufacture clothing.

León told EFE that the Peruvian textile companies at the New York fair exceeded expectations with the contracts signed to manufacture garments for various U.S. companies. This was thanks to the support from the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Export and Tourism (PromPerú).

SOUND BITES OF PERU’S MINISTER OF FOREIGN TRADE AND TOURISM (MINCETUR) ÚRSULA LEÓN.

We were projecting that we could do business deals of up to more or less 1 million dollars. At the end of yesterday I was informed that these companies that have been in these fairs have been able to close contracts for 1 year of more than 1.3 million dollars, but in some cases they also have guaranteed contracts for more than 1 year.

So, this is extremely important for us, because from the Commercial Office of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism, through Promperu, the Commercial Office in New York, we are promoting these initiatives and what we want is to give more support to more companies that can participate and then the idea is to strengthen the network of contacts of Peruvians who do business here in the country, who bring products, who import products from Peru and who position them here as part of the cultural identity of our country and which are highly valued.

We have been able to learn about success stories of workers of textile companies that are Peruvian textile companies that are bringing their brands here and whose workers talk about how they have been able to progress working in that industry. So I think there is still a lot to do. Every effort may not be complete, but we must work and continue to promote business development and exports from Peru and placed in this market.

With the importance that the United States has in, let's say, trade relations with our country. I believe it is a strategic point.

Although Peru has very consolidated tourist destinations, people say Peru or Machu Picchu and we are very proud of Machu Picchu, but we have more to offer in Peru and we have also had meetings with business people in the tourism industry, even to be able to place and promote Peru in the high-end tourism strata.

The tourist who wants to do much more, let's say, in which they invest much more, in which tourism is almost a luxury experience, not with respect to the places themselves that are luxurious, but to the historical and cultural experience that tourism in Peru implies.

The next step we are already working on and we are going to promote again is the new national tourism policy, which we hope to have next year, in which we include, within the vision of tourism, that tourism is the engine of economic growth.

And that will allow us to develop all the tourism pillars that we have planned in Peru. There are 17 tourism pillars.

Of all the tourists that have arrived in Peru up to July of this year, 19% of them come from the United States. It is a strategic country for us to develop our tourism policy.

A relaunching of the country brand, which is that everybody knows it wherever they go and, for example, the chefs, some of them said, yes, I would also be interested in having the country brand in my restaurant and that is what we want to strengthen, to be able to work there to see the administrative process involved in having the brand to make it more accessible to those who can count on and be ambassadors of our Peru brand.

I believe that our president's government has been promoting many areas. And it is giving a lot of impulse to the medium and small businesses who want to get ahead not only in his country, but as in this case abroad, and precisely their message is to attract all this investment so that Peru can develop even more and get ahead and position all its products.
