FRANCE POPE FRANCIS

The migrants in Marseille who crossed the Mediterranean haven't found freedom

Marseille (France), Sep 22 (EFE).- Every night, in the squat house where they survive in Marseille, eight young people take turns cooking. It is difficult for them to talk about what they have left behind, a painful journey to Europe. "This is not freedom either," one of them tells EFE, on the eve of Pope Francis' arrival in the French city.

TRANSLATIONS:

1.- Patrizia Giangrande, MSF medical coordinator in Marseille: "European governments can welcome migrants, because in fact, during the Ukrainian crisis there was a massive flow of refugees and they were able to welcome almost 8 million people. This shows that the reception capacity is there, it needs to be put into practice. "

2.- Étienne (not his real name), 17 years old from Guinea-Conakry: "The trip has been a little long, a little hard, there were many things. At the time of the trip when we left Guinea, we went to Mali, from Mali to Algeria. From Algeria to Tunisia and in Tunisia we took the boat to the Mediterranean".

"We are going to embark you on a boat as soon as possible, you are going to navigate using phones and GPS".

"It hasn't happened as I had anticipated but in any case it's part of life".

3.- Marcel (fictitious name) 17 years old Ivory Coast: "The trip at sea I don't know what to say, it's harder than anything, you don't know what to expect".

"Three days, there was no water to drink, no food, there were people who were seriously ill. But in the end the Italian coast guard saved us".
