ART IMMENDORFF

Madrid’s Reina Sofia Museum showcases Jorg Immendorff’s political and social activism

Madrid, Oct 29 (EFE).- The recognition of the artist's role as a political and social activist by Jorg Immendorff, one of the most influential German artists of the 20th century, has become the focus of a new exhibition at the Reina Sofía Museum.

The retrospective, the first of the artist in Spain, will be open until April 13, 2020, and brings together one hundred works covering more than four decades of Immendorff's life (1945-2007). The exhibition showcases the artist's biography and Germany’s tumultuous political history.

"He is a great artist who reflects an entire era," Manuel Borja-Villel, Reina Sofía Director and organizer of the exhibition in conjunction with Munich’s Haus der Kunts, said on Tuesday.

MANUEL BORJA-VILLEL “Immendorff is one of the most important painters of his generation. He is a painter, which you can see in the exhibition in a very clear way, in very marked times, and in the first period in which, like many artists of his time that come from post May 68, he works with that politically intense period in Europe of the 1970s. He is looking for an art that connects with people, an art that is popular and at the same time opposing pop, the minimal art that comes to them from the United States or that is too close to the market.”
