Kazakhstan celebrates its 28th anniversary of independence in Madrid

Madrid, Dec 11 (EFE).- Kazakhstan’s embassy in Spain on Tuesday commemorated the former Soviet republic’s independence in 1991 with a lavish party at an exclusive Madrid venue attended by ambassadors, representatives of the diplomatic corps, institutions and leading companies.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the key Strategic Partnership Agreement between the two countries.

The director for Western Europe and Central and Southeastern Europe for the Spanish government, Ana María Salomón, said it was important to foster and cultivate this union.

"We want to relaunch bilateral economic cooperation with new business and export projects of mutual interest,” Salomón said during her speech at the celebrations.

“In addition to our traditional export sectors to Kazakhstan such as aircraft, railway or textile material, there are other areas with undoubted growth potential, including those of the agri-food industry, building materials or pharmaceuticals,” she added.

Kazakh Ambassador to Spain Konstantin Zhigalov recalled during his speech that 2018 saw the republic’s first president, Nursultán Nazarbáyev, resign and the election of Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who pledged to continue with reforms set in motion during his predecessor's terms in office.

"Several events of the commemorative year highlight the positive dynamics of bilateral ties. Political consultations were carried out between Kazakhstan and Spain at the level of deputy foreign ministers, interparliamentary collaboration was strengthened," Zhigalov said.

The hosts also made known that Kazakhstan’s top diplomat, Mukhtar Tleuberdi, is to travel next week to Madrid to attend the fourteenth Asia-Europe Meeting of foreign ministers.

A delegation from Kazakhstan headed by the country’s Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources minister is an active participant in the COP 25 talks ongoing in Madrid, highlighting issues such as the oil- and gas-rich country’s decarbonization of the economy.
