BOLIVIA CARNIVAL

Carnival in Bolivia's largest region celebrated amid political tensions

Santa Cruz, Feb 18 (EFE).- Carnival began on Saturday in the Bolivian region of Santa Cruz, the country's largest, with an atypical "Corso 2023," with the main parade of this festivity held amid slogans of freedom and some tensions between the promoters of the celebrations and those who oppose them.

On a grey and windy day, the Corso had to be moved at the last minute from its usual home in the Parque Lineal Mutualista or "Cambódromo", in the northeast of Santa Cruz, the capital of the region of the same name, to Avenida Roca and Coronado, in the far west of this city.

Activists, who identified themselves as "self-convened" and who oppose the carnival activities, considered that there was nothing to celebrate because of the dengue epidemic that afflicts the region, but above all because of the arrest of its governor, the opposition leader Luis Fernando Camacho.

Camacho's imprisonment at the end of December for the events of the 2019 crisis in Bolivia led the Asociación Cruceña de Comparsas Carnavaleras (ACCC) to decide that the theme of the Corso should be "Let's break chains for freedom and democracy". (Camera: GINA BALDIVIESO).
