SPAIN JUDGE GARZON

MADRID (SPAIN), 24/04/2010.- Two woman rises portatits of their relatives killed during the Spanish Civil Guard (1936-1939) during the demonstration against the indictment of Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon in Madrid, central Spain, on 24 April 2010. Garzon has been suspended from duty by the Consejo General del Poder Judicial (CGPJ), the governing body of the Spanish judiciary, over the charges of exceeding his jurisdiction in his investigation of the alleged atrocities committed by general Francisco Franco and his allies during the Spanish Civil War and under the Franco dictatorship. The judge faces being disbarred for 20 years for abuse of power, but, in the meantime, also on 24 April 2010 Garzon has challenged the authority of Supreme Court judge Luciano Varela, who is instructing the case, for his 'direct interest' and 'partiality' in the case.
