Eger (Hungary), 18/09/2019.- A healthcare professional prepares an infusion in the Hospice Department of Markhot Ferenc Hospital in Eger, northern Hungary, 18 September 2019 (issued 11 October 2019). World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of October, which falls on 12 October this year with the motto 'My care is my right.' The first such event was organised in 2005 by a committee of the Worldwide Palliative Care Alliance, a wordwide network of hospice and palliative care organisations to draw attention to the needs of people who have been impacted by a life-limiting illness. Hospices operate to alleviate the pain and lessen the mental suffering of terminally ill patients while focusing on humane treatment and the protection of personal dignity. In Hungary, the foundraising events dedicated to the development of the hospice professsion on this special day are co-ordinated by the Hungarian Hospice-Palliative Association, which has been providing care for incurable cancer patients in Budapest since 1991.
