Containers are stacked 6 high at the world's busiest container port at Kwai Chung, Hong Kong 29 November. The 2002 throughput was 19.1 million TEU containers and the operators expect to break this world record again this year despite growing competition from nearby container ports in mainland China. Ambitious plans to bring about greater integration between the former colonies of Hong Kong and Macau with the mainland both through the physical means of new bridges and border crossings and the CEPA free trade regime to begin 2004 are brightening prospects in the area.
