"El Rocio" religious pilgrimage begins in Spain after "jumping the fence" tradition

Huelva, May 29 (EFE).- The highly anticipated procession of the Virgin of El Rocío in the Spanish town of Almonte began early Monday after the “jumping the fence” tradition, during which devotees needed to jump across the fence to reach the altar and carry the statue of the Virgin.

The 'El Rocio' Pilgrimage, one of the most important traditions in the region, attracts thousands of faithful from across Andalusia and the entire country.

Every year, devotees gear up their carriages and horses to head in the direction of the El Rocio shrine to pay tribute to the Virgin of El Rocio. (Camera: DAVID ARJONA).
