Quito, Nov 21 (EFE).- Hundreds of people marched in protest against the government of President Daniel Noboa on Thursday in Quito, Ecuador, criticising economic policies and the impact of the current energy crisis, which has caused daily blackouts of up to 14 hours. The march, led by trade unions and student federations, was blocked by 2,000 police, leading to clashes as protesters tried to reach the historic centre. The protest also highlighted alleged mass dismissals and labour rights violations linked to the crisis. (Camera: JUAN FRANCISCO CHÁVEZ). SOUND BITES AND TRANSLATION: 1.JOSÉ VILLAVICENCIO, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED WORKERS' FRONT (FUT)(IN SPANISH). - An inept, indolent government that fails to solve problems. It's unacceptable for an energy crisis to be dumped on the backs of workers and the people. This government is about to complete a year in office and has not addressed the primary needs of Ecuadorians. - We call on everyone to raise their voices to not remain silent, because now is the time to act. Otherwise, this paper tiger government will lead us into the abyss. This administration has proven incapable of solving our problems. 2. CRISTINA CACHAGUAY, PRESIDENT OF MUJERES POR EL CAMBIO (WOMEN FOR CHANGE)(IN SPANISH). -Daniel Noboa's government has been one of ineptitude. It is a sexist, misogynistic administration that not only despises women but also rejects the working class. Ecuador is not a hacienda, Mr. Noboa. We are not white-collar criminals or drug traffickers. We are men and women with banners, not bullets or tear gas. This is the result of an incapable government. Today, nationwide, we take to the streets and declare that on November 25th, women from the working class will also be blocking the streets for a dignified life. Because we want to live, with jobs, health, and education.
