OLYMPIC GAMES

Paris suburbs protest uncontrolled construction ahead of Olympic Games

Paris, August 17 (EFE/EPA).- (Camera: Christophe Petit-Tesson) Two years ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, residents of the suburbs are organizing to denounce the construction of buildings at the expense of green spaces, raising housing prices and increasing pollution around schools.

Serge Begun, a resident of the Dugny commune, walks his dog through the Aire des Vents. At the other end of the park, almost a dozen cranes are now working on the construction of the "media village", a new neighborhood with 1,300 homes.

SOUNDBITES OF:

-ARTHUR, MEMBER OF SACCAGE 2024:

"We are in the Parc de la Corneuve, in the Aire des Vents, and here is being built on seven hectares to raise the city of the press. It is a huge, very dense neighborhood with a lot of concrete where journalists will be hosted during the Olympics, and then it will become a neighborhood. They keep saying that it is a legacy for residents, but we only see that here there was a park to walk, learn to ride a bike, and now they have destroyed seven public hectares to build a huge "eco-neighborhood" which is only "eco" in its name."

-SERGE BEGUN, RESIDENT:

"They have cut down half of the park, cutting down trees and everything to build buildings when there are places and fields around where there is space. It is incomprehensible."
