INDIA ABUSES WRESTLING

March of support in Kolkata for athletes who alleged sexual abuse in wrestling federation

Kolkata (India), May 29 (EFE/EPA) - (Camera: Piyal Adhikary) New Delhi Police filed charges of violence against athletes alleging sexual abuse within the Wrestling Federation after more than a month of protests and a violent crackdown by authorities to prevent a march.

The athletes, who attempted to march to the Indian Parliament yesterday, were charged with rioting and unlawful demonstration for attempting to reach the legislative building without permission at the same time as the government held a ceremony to inaugurate the new capitol.

"The protesters yesterday flouted the law in the spirit of violence despite all requests and applications," the Delhi Police Commissioner's office said on Monday to indicate the revocation of permission to protest.
