Indonesian students lead protests to defend Islamic banking system

Banda Aceh, May 24 (EFE/EPA).- A group of Indonesian students took to the streets of Banda Aceh on Wednesday to protest against the presence of conventional banks in the region.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia that has enacted sharia law, rejecting the operation of conventional banking systems as of 2021.

However, a senior official of the Financial Services Authority recently stated that the government will discuss the resumption of conventional bank operations in Aceh province.

Since the banning of conventional banks, Aceh has adopted a financial system that conforms to the principles of Islamic law, including the prohibition of usury and the encouragement of risk-sharing. (Camera: HOTLI SIMANJUNTAK).
