Some 20,000 teachers demonstrate in Bucharest to demand a wage increase

Bucharest (Romania), May 30 (EFE/EPA). - (Camera: Robert Ghement) Some 20,000 Romanian primary and secondary school teachers demonstrated on Tuesday in Bucharest to demand better salaries, continuing a strike that began more than a week ago and is already the biggest protest in the sector in the last 18 years.

The labour dispute has even forced a halt to the rotation of the post of prime minister, agreed between the conservative National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which should have taken place last Friday as part of the coalition agreement that the two formations closed last December.

Education unions on Tuesday rejected a new government offer to grant two annual bonuses of 500 euros, and maintain their demand for a 25% increase in salaries, which currently range from 500 to 1,000 euros per month, depending on years of experience.
