An exhibition at the Met in New York highlights African inspiration in Byzantine art

A person observes a work from the exhibition 'Africa & Byzantium', at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York, USA, 20 November 2023. A new exhibition at the Met highlights Africa's role in the Byzantine Empire (331-1435) and exposes its cultural and artistic influence through mosaics, textiles, vases and other works, many of them never or rarely seen in public. 'Africa & Byzantium' points out the ethnic and religious diversity of the great cities of the southern Mediterranean basin that for centuries were centers of activity in the Roman and Byzantine empires - in what are now Egypt and several countries in North Africa -, which was echoed even by the Christian philosopher and theologian Saint Augustine of Hippo.
